Event Promotions: An Interview with Clear Channel’s Kara Adrian

On July 17, 2014, Clear Channel’s Kara Adrian sat down for an interview at the company’s Treasure Coast radio station in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to discuss her role as promotions director for Oldies 103.7 and country station Wave 92.7. As she outlines the various promotional mediums that these stations offer, she speaks with an infectious enthusiasm and a welcoming candor that visitors readily find within her country roots of Franklin Tenn., a small town located just south of Nashville where Adrian fondly recalls having country music superstar Alan Jackson as her neighbor.

According to its website, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment owns and operates 840 stations throughout the United States, Australia and New Zealand. As advertising mediums, its stations promote their individual brands as well as those of non-profit organizations and other businesses on air, on site and online. Wave 92.7 and Oldies 103.7, in particular, often provide free public service announcements and live DJ chatter for community events and local nonprofits.

Adrian calls special attention to the one-hour van hits, pre-party event packages and two-hour remote packages that these stations coordinate to help businesses and nonprofits get their messages out to the community. During these events, guests listen to free, live music and can register to win concert tickets.

In addition to local business and community-sponsored events, Clear Channel’s Treasure Coast station also curates its own events, such as this year’s 33rd Annual Country Showdown — a nationwide talent competition that the station will host this August at the Long Branch Saloon in Vero Beach, Fla., where participants will compete to win $100,000.

After eight years with the company, Adrian reflects on her personal journey as she offers guidance to college-bound students. “The advice that I would give to anybody looking to go into the promotions field would be to have an education in either marketing or business, which is what I have my degree in,” said Adrian. “It taught me all the computer systems . . . how to be a people person . . . how to be organized. Those are all important aspects in working with promotions.”
